History

The building that we now know as Dundalk & Proton Community School opened in 1971. Originally it was called the Proton Community School. Prior to that time, the elementary children in Dundalk attended King Edward School, which stood immediately in front of the current school. The new Proton School served children from rural areas whose one-room schools had been closed. Originally, children attended the Proton School from Kindergarten to Grade 5. The current arrangement has made Proton a primary school with students leaving at the end of Grade 3. In 1980, Proton School was twinned with the Junior/Intermediate School at Highpoint Elementary School. The name was changed to Dundalk & Proton Community School. The two schools now operate independently.

In September 2012, All Day, Every Day Kindergarten started for students entering Dundalk Proton Community School. Within each class is a teacher and full time Early Childhood Educator (ECE) with approximately 28 students per class. Together the teacher and ECE make a great team.

Currently, our school population is approximately 245 students. The staff is comprised of a principal, office manager, teachers, educational assistants, early child educators and a head custodian with two part-time assistants. Several board employees and those from other agencies such as Speech and Language Pathologists, Area Resource Teacher, Occupational Therapist, and Physiotherapist, visit the school to assist staff and students with programs.

Dundalk & Proton Community School is fortunate to have many volunteers from the community who join us to help throughout the school in a variety of ways. This group of caring adults works as a team to provide an excellent opportunity for the students to receive the most productive early education possible. Our Breakfast Club volunteers serve breakfast to our students on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; while trays of food are provided to each class on Mondays and Fridays. We feel blessed to have such great volunteers who help our students get their day off with a great start.
